Board and batten calculator: spacing, battens and sticks to buy

On a 12 ft wall with 1x3 battens and a gap near 16 inches, the even layout is 9 battens with 15 3/16 inch gaps. For a full-height wall that is 9 sticks of 8 ft stock. Battens at both ends count, the gaps come out identical, and doors and windows are taken out of the board area behind them.

How the even spacing is found

Spacing means the clear gap between battens here, measured face to face, with a batten standing in each corner. Given a gap you like, the calculator finds the whole number of gaps that lands nearest it. It then spreads the leftover across every gap so the wall ends exactly on a batten. Given a batten count, it does the same in reverse. On-center spacing, which some layouts use, is the gap plus one batten width. The list shows it so you can mark the wall either way. Battens are cut to the height between the baseboard and the top rail. The rail and baseboard are counted as their own runs across the wall.

Gaps = round((wall width − batten width) ÷ (target gap + batten width)). Battens = gaps + 1. Real gap = (wall width − battens × batten width) ÷ gaps. Batten length = wall height − rail − baseboard.

Batten counts for common walls

Wall width 12 in target, 1x3 16 in target, 1x3 16 in target, 1x4
8 ft 7 battens, 13 1/16 in gaps 6 battens, 16 3/16 in 6 battens, 15 in
10 ft 9 battens, 12 3/16 in 7 battens, 17 1/16 in 7 battens, 15 15/16 in
12 ft 11 battens, 11 5/8 in 9 battens, 15 3/16 in 8 battens, 16 9/16 in
16 ft 14 battens, 12 1/16 in 11 battens, 16 7/16 in 11 battens, 15 3/8 in

Gaps are rounded to the nearest sixteenth. A 1x3 is 2 1/2 in wide and a 1x4 is 3 1/2 in.

A 10 ft bedroom wall to two-thirds height

The wall is 120 in wide and the paneling will stop at 64 in, two-thirds of an 8 ft ceiling, under a 1x4 cap. The existing 3 1/2 in baseboard stays. With 1x3 battens and a 16 in target the layout is 7 battens with 17 1/16 in gaps. Each batten runs from the baseboard to the rail: 64 − 3.5 − 3.5 = 57 in. An 8 ft stick cuts one 57 in batten with a 39 in offcut, which is not long enough for a second. So it is 7 sticks.

From 10 ft stock, two battens come out of each stick, and the order drops to 4. The cap is 10 ft, one 10 ft 1x4. There is a 36 by 80 in door in this wall. So the backer area is 120 × 64 minus the 36 × 64 the door takes at that height, 37 square feet. That is two 4 by 8 sheets of 1/4 in plywood ripped to 64 in. Nails: 7 battens at about 12 each, 84 in all, a fraction of one box.

Marking the wall

Snap a level line for the top of the rail first, then set the baseboard line. Measure the batten length from the lines, not from the floor, because floors are rarely level. Mark the batten centers from one corner using the on-center figure. Check the far corner lands on the last batten before any adhesive comes out. Find the studs. Battens that land on one get nailed through, and the rest get adhesive and nails into the drywall at an angle. Install the rail and baseboard first, then the battens. Then caulk every edge before paint; that is the usual finishing step, not a published rule. Board and batten spacing explains the even-gap arithmetic and the makers' outdoor rules.

Exterior siding is a different calculation

Outdoors the boards or panels do the covering and the battens cover the seams. So the batten count follows the panel and board widths, not a look you choose. James Hardie's HardiePanel instructions put the studs at most 24 inches on center and cover the vertical panel joints with battens. LP's SmartSide instructions nail trim used as battens once per width at most every 36 inches up the wall. They also keep battens off horizontal panel joints. Those guides, with their fastener sizes and clearances to grade and roofing, are the ones to follow outside. The interior rules here are for accent walls, wainscoting and entry halls.

Questions about board and batten layout

How far apart should board and batten be?

No standards body sets a spacing for an interior accent wall. It is a design choice, and common choices run from 10 to 24 inches, with no published standard behind them. Pick a gap you like, and the calculator moves it to the nearest size that comes out even across the wall. That avoids a leftover half gap at one end, the mistake everyone notices. Exterior board and batten siding is different. The battens cover the seams of the boards, so their spacing is the board width. The siding maker's installation guide rules.

How do I calculate board and batten spacing?

Subtract one batten width from the wall width and divide by the target gap plus a batten width. Round to a whole number of gaps, and add one for the battens. Then recompute the real gap: wall width minus all the battens, divided by the number of gaps. Take a 144 in wall with 2 1/2 in battens and a 16 in target. That gives (144 − 2.5) ÷ 18.5 = 7.6, so 8 gaps and 9 battens. The real gap is (144 − 22.5) ÷ 8 = 15.19 in.

Do I count the battens at both ends?

Yes. A batten in each corner frames the wall and hides the edge of the backer board, and it is how the count here works. Where a wall runs into a door casing or another finished edge, drop the end batten on that side. Treat the casing as the end. The batten-count mode lets you do that.

What size wood is used for board and batten?

Indoors the battens are ordinary trim boards. A 1x2 is 1 1/2 in wide, a 1x3 is 2 1/2 in and a 1x4 is 3 1/2 in. By the American Softwood Lumber Standard, all are 3/4 in thick. Outdoors, fiber cement and engineered wood makers sell matching batten boards for their vertical panels. James Hardie pairs HardiePanel with its own trim battens, and LP SmartSide gives nailing rules for trim used as battens.

Do I need plywood behind the battens on an interior wall?

Only if the drywall texture would show between battens or the paint sheens would not match. Smooth drywall painted the same color as the battens is the cheapest route. Textured walls get 1/4 inch plywood, MDF or hardboard sheets first, which is the backer option here. The sheets are 4 by 8 ft, and the count comes from the wall area with the openings taken out.

How do I handle doors and windows?

Add each opening with its width and height. The calculator takes its area out of the backer sheet count. It keeps the batten count based on the full wall width, because the batten rhythm should continue across the wall. Battens that land on an opening get cut above the window, or the door casing becomes the batten at that spot. A batten that lands within an inch of a casing is better moved onto it.

How many nails do I need for battens?

The calculator counts a pair of finish nails every 12 inches up each batten plus a pair at each end. So an 8 ft batten takes about 20 nails, and a 12 ft wall of 9 battens takes about 180, a fraction of one box. That is the calculator's own allowance, not a published rule. Indoors, construction adhesive with finish nails is the common practice, since battens at these spacings land between studs more often than on them. Outdoors, LP's instructions for trim used as battens are one nail per width at most every 36 inches vertically.
